What does her marriage have to do with her getting success and gigs? Obviously the reviewer has been reading blogs which talk about her personal life, and this has tinged her impression of her stage persona-
I agree with popp fanatic- you can comment on the stage character and persona- but if it was just about that, her marriage and gigs and success would not affect that judgement. anyway, everyone is getting a bit tired of reading trash, and that kind of line-crossing between an accurate responsible review of performance and a character attack based on other publicity etc... well, it's just kinda obvious. But I suppose this is what it means when you become known- people start to treat classical artists like they are in people magazine.
look at trebs and all the uber publicity about mr trebs and the baby...

"On the negative side, it was obvious that she had copied many of Cotrubas’ mannerisms which is a pity. She should also be less self-absorbed and full of herself, and while she reminds me of Kathleen Battle, she does not have her unpleasantness and knows how to cover her arrogance. At any rate, if she continues to choose her roles carefully, and given her recent marriage to Gus Christie, she should continue to enjoy a successful career and major gigs."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6370742521301499135.post-64594266683604550702010-03-26T12:24:21.490+02:002010-03-26T12:24:21.490+02:00See, that's the bit that I cannot understand. ...See, that's the bit that I cannot understand. Why should our opinion of a performer's stage persona have anything to do with what they're really like in person? Leaving the rather puerile name-dropping aspect aside (knowing a perfomer in person doesn't make one more knowledgable about the quality of the performance), why should I as an opera goer care if someone is a wonderful human being in private if I don't fancy their on-stage personality? I have no opinion of De Niese as I haven't as yet seen her perform live (the only bit that counts in my book), but I don't care if she works with blind kittens and gives all her dough to charity once she's off the stage. If I find her to be arrogant/self-absorbed/uncharismatic/whatever I will say so. Conversely, I may be a colossal fan of the on-stage image of Trebs, Dessay, Keenlyeside or Vargas (it's not just glamour, someone's stage persona can be likeable in many levels), but I won't change my opinion of their performance if they sacrifice puppies to Moloch after the show.

I do agree about the bit on Susanna, though. A bit bizarre not to consider her the central character in the opera to say the least.Popp Fanaticnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6370742521301499135.post-24305787770084000592010-03-24T22:20:30.051+02:002010-03-24T22:20:30.051+02:00Hit a nerve? Hon, I'm not the one writing 2.000 word comments in order to defend my friend-singer defying the fact that other people are as well entitled to have an opinion. I have nothing against De Niese, as a matter of fact I'm trully indifferent to her art, I found her Cleopatra quite interesting, watched her open-air concert in Amsterdam and thought she was ok and even bought the Haendel cd. Sorry to say, but I would travel 2.000 miles to see DiDonato live, but I def. wouldn't even leave my office earlier to watch De Niese. De gustibus et de coloribus... btw, you seem to have a lot of time to spare. I would put my name but I'm at a cafe and on explorer where I can't google in. I found you while looking up Ms Deniese. To me seems like people who can't see into the future enjoy writing off Deniese because on the surface she has the package. But she works everywhere, in all big respected houses, and they can't be hiring her from a young age because of her good look and charisma. Half the people that work in opera ar gay, no? So there must be something in her musicianship and intelligence that is gaining her the respect of the business. It's worth giving her time to grow into the big shoes the opera world has credited to her artistry. God know she would not be the first. I feel sorry for singers- they have to fight through so much critism to still be standing at the end.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6370742521301499135.post-68604040958019023322010-03-24T00:10:16.818+02:002010-03-24T00:10:16.818+02:00Dear Anonymous - both.

How can you parade on yo...What a lop-sided review!
How can you parade on your blog claiming to write review as if you are somehow in the know?
I work at Chicago Lyric.
Peter Hall was most certainly NOT there to guide the cast, Miss de Niese is the farthest thing from narcissistic- she is perhaps one of the most gving and caring artists I've seen in a long time, and her colleages adore her; she even came in with Ms. di Donato for rehearsals to help Ms. Cabell prepae for Countess. And Susanna is one of the most difficult roles in the soprano repertoir- and eveyone remotely close to music knows this-
so much for your expertise.
It's terribly crass to suggest that Miss de Niese copies Cotrubas. They are in fact very different creatures- Ms. Corubas being far more straightforward and less complex that Ms de Niese's characterizations, for which she has been greatly praised internally at the house. And even more crass to suggest that her marriage would have anything to do with her career success, when she's been on the scene at places like the MET for more than a decade. If her voice sounds better live than on disc (which is does by the way), it's because she's incredibly young, and people forget that because she's been known for some time. She's barely out of her 20's. It's just reaks of bitterness and cruelty to try to insinuate she is self-absorbed when it's probably the last thing she is.
Your review is otherwise fine, but these three attacks on the staging and Ms de Niese are just plain wrong, and misinformed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6370742521301499135.post-14880868709611269542010-03-22T21:28:08.909+02:002010-03-22T21:28:08.909+02:00"Enter the American mentality and desire for ..."Enter the American mentality and desire for lavish and heavy sets indicative of a “provincial,” second-rate taste, or rather lack thereof!"
I love it!
