Parsifal may be an airman BUT life goes on and don't expect that i won't find a way to leave Greece for a while, just to watch something decent (after the terrible Denyce Graves Carmen i watched last night). Well, Milan is not on the menu for this season (London is...) but hey! with 75euro you can fly easyjet Athens-Milan-Athens and spend 2 nights at a nice 4* Milan Hotel plus the La Scala ticket, and all these for just 280 euros! (Yes, i've done it, it's possible...).
So, the La Scala season will open with a very promising Tristan und Isolde with Waltraut Meier and Ian Storey in a new production of the master Patrice Chereau and the direction of Daniel Barenboim.
Ok nice, but also check this out: Maria Stuarda with Mariella Devia and Antonacci?? Groovy! Figlia impura di Bolena! Parli tu di disonore!!!!! I would definitely desert the army to watch this...
During the same period you can also watch Placido D. and Sondra Radvanovsky in Alfano's Cyrano de Bergerac (the Met production).
I won't mention Wozzeck even if my beloved Evelyn Herlitzius sings Marie. My mental situation due to the air force is quite fragile and i wouldn't put it in jeopardy with a Wozzeck...
In March one can have the oportunity to watch the Puccini Trittico with a most promising cast (Pons, Frittoli, Nucci etc)
April is dominated by Macbeth with Nucci and Urmana/Neves and then in May more modern opera: Maazel's 1984 (a work that received really mediocre or negative reviews last year).
You want more? I would definitely take the plane in order to watch a Chenier with Fiorenza Cedolins, Marcelo Alvarez and Renato Bruson in June...and guess what! The army will be over by then! Hehehe...
I would also stay a couple of days more so as to watch Kristina Opolais' debut at La Scala in Prokofiev's "Igrok'" - (The Gambler)
That's all i think for the season...OHHH! And don't forget! Some concerts, one by Juan Diego Florez another by Edita Gruberova (Edita is back @ La Scala!) and then Diana Damrau and Joyce DiDonato!
Ok, sometimes i envy OperaChic soooo much...
