Anna Netrebko in Athens!

Don't get carried away. No! mother-to-be Anna is not coming to Athens any time soon.

But last night, while reviewing some old programmes of the Athens Festival, I found out that Anna had sung in Athens, at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, on September the 10th, 1996, together with the Rotterdam Philharmonic under the mighty baton of Valery Gergiev.

The programme included Modest Mussorgsky's song cycle "The Nursery", «Детская».

The programme notes feature a photo of Anna (next to her CV) that displays Anna's celestial beauty even before the army of stylists, hair and make-up artists responsible for her today look...

Now, 2 things: where was I on the 10th of September of 1996? And, did anyone witness la Netrebka in Athens??? Huh???

Parsi, thanks for the info! The last days I have been updating my Anna performance's database, mainly filling gaps of the early years 1994-1997, but I did not have this one yet. Anna with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gergiev was at the BBC PROMS just a few days before on 7. Sep 1996, and later on, on 14. Nov 1996, she was singing Micaela of Carmen in Tokyo, with Gergiev conducting.

I thought you would want that info for your database... I ll ask some friends who tend to record every single performance of the Athens Festival to see if we ve got it recorded as well....
