Padre augusto, conosco il nome dello straniero!

Il suo nome... é ORRORE!

(or how a most promising set of names featuring Renata Scotto, Janice Baird, Franco Farina, Elena Kelessidi, Dimitri Kavrakos and Lukas Karytinos, offered one of the most disgraceful Turandot's in the history of mankind)

More to come tomorrow...

Ἀπὸ τὴν πρώτη σου φωτογραφία πάντως δὲν βλέπω κἄτι ἄσχημο. Ἡ Κελεσίδη στὴν "ε.φ." (ἐφημερίδα τοῦ φεστιβὰλ Ἀθηνῶν) πρὶν 2 μέρες ἔλεγε τὰ καλύτερα γιὰ τὴν σκηνοθεσία καὶ ἔκανε σύγκριση μὲ ἄθλια παράσταση τοῦ Βερολίνου ὅπου τὴν εἶχαν ντύσει μὲ ξανθιὰ περοῦκα καὶ πλαστικὸ τυρκουάζ μίνι, ἡ δὲ Τουραντὼ φοροῦσε τζὴν κὶ ἀθλητικά παπούτσια κὶ ἔκανε καράτε ἐπὶ σκηνῆς! Πόσο πιὸ ἄσχημα νὰ ἦταν τὰ δικά μας;
Μουσικῶς δὲν ξέρω, ἀναμένω!

I am really surprised at Baird - she was so powerful here as Marie in Wozzeck (even if she didn't quite erase memories of Silja and Steber.) The whole thing sounds horrible - glad I didn't come over for it. Any hope the second cast will be better?

Silja? Steber? Are you kiddin? If i dared to compare her Turandot to Dimitrova's it would be a sacrilege! BTW, the full review has just been posted.

OMG! Baird was FANTASTIC! I was there. Her voice was enormous and beautiful Maybe you had bad seats? But the recording is wonderful. How do I get a copy? Oh, BTW I dont believe Baird ever sang Sieglinde....maybe you are misinformed?

You re right, i was referring to her BRUNNHilde at Marseille in 2007. On the other hand, we totally disagree on whether she was fantastic or not. Bad seats? How do you get bad seats in an amphitheatre? If one's voice cannot fill the Odeon for everybody to hear (it's a 5.000 seats open air Roman Odeon after all) in a role like Turandot well, then she's totally miscast. (and as you can hear in my recording, my seats were great).

Ps. After Baird, i praise the lord for having seen/heard Ghena Dimitrova as Turandot live (and, Giovanna Casolla too...)

Saw Dimitrova in Chicago back in the early 90s and Casolla last year here at Caracalla. Both were powerful Turandots - though the best was a Turandot on the MET's last spring tour in Toronto in 1961 - Birgit Nillson, Franco Corelli and Teresa Stratas - now that was a Turandot. And yes I know you weren't even born then!!!!

Stop giving me evils! The mere mention of such names are enough to make my head spin around (a la maniere Linda Blair or Danielle De Niese)... I mean, Nillson & Franco & Teresa??? Hhhmmm...And imagine that the best Turandot i ve seen live was Dimitrova/Bartolini/Chiara...

ps. How was I Lombardi in Naples? You didnt say i thing!

sorry going to post something about the Lombardi but I've been up to my ears in guests for the past three weeks - finally got a few days until the next set arrive. Springtime in Roma!!!!!
