This was a wonderful concert - both artists were in great voice with a sizzling chemistry between them. There was a real sense from the performers that if their audience hear didn't know much about opera then they were going to get a crash course. I have never seen Gheorghiu so vivacious and generous as she was this evening, she gave a real impression of being happy - there was a fantastic uninhibited quality about her performance which reached a peak in the Butterfly aria. Kaufmann looked great - I really hadn't realised he was so good looking from his photographs. In the flesh he was charmingly flirtatious, wonderfully intense. It was hard to believe the pair are not lovers in real life. The whole evening felt like we were spying on a secret love tryst. It's amazing how performing in Abu Dhabi sometimes has the effect of liberating artists, performing before an appreciative crowd who have less expectation than those in Europe or the States.
